27 June 2004Junior Blues Triumphant Blue Mountains Rugby Under 19's came away with a strong win by 26 - nil against Wahroonga last Saturday. The lads were ably led by skipper Nathan Macguire who proved a real handfull around the scrums and rucks. The team scored 4 tries - two to Josh Grant and one each to Jake Baker and Liam Winton, with Josh Grant converting three: a personal total for Josh of 16 points. Strong performances wre put in by Luke Wheatland,Richard van Os and James O'Brien. Best & Fairest: Luke Wheatland (3 points); Richard van Os and James O'Brien(2); The rest of the team (1 each); Player's player: Nathan Macguire. The senior club did not fare so well in the home games against Barker Old Boys - although the Nicholson Cup fixture was certainly the match of the day at home. The Blues came away with a hard fought win by 17-12; ending an unbeaten 9 game stretch by Barker. Barker were first to score with a converted try but the Blues bounced back with a great try to half Jimmy Hand; converted by Mick Down which levelled the scores. Barker then scored an unconverted try but a second 5 pointer by Paul Harper also converted by Down saw the lead regained - scoreline 14-12. Despite constant pressure from the opposition, the Blues held on and were awarded a penalty some 40 metres out. In difficult swirling conditions Mick Down put his hand up and steered the ball between the uprights for the final score: 17-12. The Campbell Cup side were held to a 10 all draw with tries to Sargeant Green & Chris Hill. Best & Fairest: Josh Lewis(3); Chris Hill(2); Ben Bifield(1); Player's Player: Chris Hill. The Farrant Cup side went down by 17-7 with the try scorer Lindsay Smith converted James Ritchie. Best & Fairest: James Brownlee(3); Lindsay Smith(2); Dave Smoth(1); Player's Player: James Brownlee. The Clark Cup was a lack lustre affair with the Blues going down to Barker by 29 - 11. The sole Blues try to hooker Cameron Williams whilst Dave Twomey kicked 2 penalties.
